Several displaced as fire ravages Farm, Vryheid’s Lust buildings

A three-bedroom, two-storey house at Farm, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was completely gutted by a fire suspected to be electrical, leaving the owners displaced.
Based on reports received, the fire was detected in the upper flat of the two-storey wooden and concrete building at around 11:00h.
The upper flat was occupied by the owner, Zureen Lewis, and her husband, who were not at home at the time. They reportedly lost everything in the blaze, with nothing being salvaged from the house.
The lower flat, which sustained some water damage, is occupied by several tenants.
At the time of the fire, construction work was being done on the building, including the completion of the ceiling in one section of the house.
According to the contractor, the blaze reportedly started at the back portion of the house.

However, one tenant was reportedly at home when the fire started but managed to flee the building safely.
The owner related that she received a call about 30 minutes after the fire, informing her that the house had been completely gutted. By the time she reached the scene, the fire tenders from the Diamond Fire Station and a water carrier from the Eccles Fire Station, along with their respective crews, were at the scene putting out the blaze.
Nevertheless, the Guyana Fire Service stated that after receiving the report, several teams were deployed to the area. Upon arrival, they observed the building engulfed in flames, with the fire concentrated on the upper floor.
Through swift and coordinated firefighting efforts, firefighters brought the blaze under control, contained it to the upper floor of the building, and prevented it from spreading to a nearby structure.
The fire was subsequently extinguished, and crews conducted the necessary mopping-up operations to ensure there were no remaining hotspots. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.
Meanwhile, another fire, this time at South Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara (ECD), has also left several persons homeless.
The fire service reported that a wooden building was completely destroyed. Other nearby structures also sustained damage. The blaze was subsequently brought under control and prevented from spreading to the nearby buildings.
Unfortunately, the building and its contents were completely destroyed. A motor car and motorcycle were also destroyed as a result of the fire. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.
