Sophia man slapped with manslaughter charge

A 31-year-old labourer accused of killing 26-year-old Seon Harry was on Tuesday hauled to the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where he faced a manslaughter charge before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
The charge against Darrius Barrington of Lot 634 A Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown, stated that on October 18, 2018 at South Sophia, he unlawfully killed Harry.
Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers told the court that on October 18, 2018, the now deceased man and the accused were involved in a heated argument, which escalated into a scuffle. According to the Prosecutor, during the scuffle, Harry dealt the accused three chops about the body. In retaliation, the accused, who was also armed with a knife, inflicted one stab wound on Harry. Both men were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where Harry was pronounced dead.
Defence Attorney Lawrence Harris, in a bail application, told the court that his client was not a flight risk, further stating that his client was attacked by the now deceased, which resulted in him being fatally stabbed. However, the Chief Magistrate remanded the father of three to prison. The case will continue on November 5, 2018.
Guyana Times had previously reported that on Wednesday, October 17, 2018, the now dead man had borrowed the accused’s bicycle, which he returned after midnight. This resulted in the two having a brief but heated exchange of words.
The following day, October 18, the now dead man armed himself with a cutlass and dealt the accused several chops while he was hanging out with his friends. The accused sustained chop wounds to his head, abdomen and arm. In retaliation, the injured man dealt the deceased one fatal stab to his body.
