Star-studded squads revealed for Champion of Champions

A number of big names across the local scene in masters’ softball cricket are set to take to the field as the Guyana Floodlights Softball Cricket Association (GFSCA) brings back Inter-County Softball Cricket Tournament, the Champion of Champion, after an absence of over two decades.

In the tournament, Mike’s Pharmacy’s ‘Champion of Champions’ are set to ignite the Ogle Community Centre Ground this weekend (April 15-16). Anyone who follows softball will know each and every player who has been shortlisted in the squads.
With three teams set to draw battle in the inter-county clash, Wellman’s Demerara will be captained by seasoned campaigner Wayne Jones, who will have at his disposal the big guns of Ramo Malone, Mahendra Arjune and Mahase Chunilall to use to great effect.
Richard Persaud, who will captain Valvoline Demerara, will be hoping the likes of Mahendra Hardyal, Danny Mohanram and Tony Singh get going in their action.
Trophy Stall Essequibo will see Sahadeo Hardaiow captaining a side that includes the likes of Mohamed Rafeek, Roy Gonsalves and Anthony Persaud, all of whom are dangerous when in form.
Only three teams have been named so far; Permaul’s Trading Berbice is yet to be finalised.
The tournament, a 20-over-per-side competition, will be played on a round-robin basis, with the first two preliminary matches starting from 09:30h.
The structure of prizes will see the successful team taking home $200,000, and the second place $100,000, both with trophies. The best batsman and best bowler in the preliminary rounds will receive $5,000 and a trophy, while “man of the finals” will also be $5,000 richer and will get a trophy for his efforts.
Additionally, fans will see an exhibition game between the Trophy Stall Angels and Mike’s Wellwoman in a gigantic female clash. The winner will be rewarded with $50,000 and a trophy, while the runner-up will receive $25,000. The “female of the match”, best bowler and best batter will all be rewarded.
Admission to the venue is not heavily priced. However, persons who hold tickets for the BBQ that will be on sale in the ground will be allowed to enter the ground at no additional cost.
The BBQ tickets are available at all the sponsors’ locations, and at members of the GFSCA at a cost of $1,000. Also, persons desirous of purchasing tickets can do so by calling 661-8263 or 650-1790.
