Ranks from the Lethem Police Station, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) conducted a series of outreach activities targeting students and minibus drivers, while a separate engagement was held with fishermen on the West Coast of Berbice (WCB) earlier in the week.
At St Ignatius Secondary School, Officer-in-Charge of Crime for Region Nine, Inspector Adolphus, led a lecture on Friday focusing on serious offences such as murder, armed robbery and larceny. He outlined the impact of these crimes on individuals and communities and encouraged students to avoid drugs and remain focused on their education. Sergeant Persaud of the Traffic Department addressed road safety, urging students to obey traffic laws, use pedestrian crossings and remain alert. He cautioned against distractions, including mobile phone use and stressed the importance of responsible behaviour.

Station Sergeant James addressed bullying, noting that it can lead to conflict and is unacceptable. He encouraged students to practise respect, discipline and honesty, while discouraging theft and misconduct. The session also included an interactive segment where students asked questions. On the same day, ranks from the Lethem Police Station Traffic Department conducted a road safety lecture for minibus drivers operating between the North Rupununi and Lethem.

The session was led by Subordinate Officer-in-Charge of the Traffic Department, Sergeant Persaud, along with Constables John and Jacobs. Drivers were engaged on key road safety issues, including speeding, proper vehicle maintenance, especially during the rainy season, timely renewal of vehicle documents and adherence to traffic laws. Officers also addressed the dangers of reckless driving, operating a vehicle without a licence, and driving under the influence of alcohol. They outlined the Five Cs of driving, explained procedures for obtaining a driver’s licence and encouraged drivers to report traffic offenders.

Drivers were urged to practise safe driving habits to protect themselves and other road users. The session was well received, with participants expressing appreciation and calling for more frequent engagements. In a separate outreach effort, Inspector Woode and ranks from the Blairmont Police Station engaged fishermen on Tuesday last at Three Door Koker, D’Edward Village, WCB. Fishermen were given an opportunity to raise concerns affecting their safety and livelihoods. Officers encouraged vigilance and advised them to report any suspicious activities.
