Subcontractor electrocuted after coming into contact with GPL’s network

A subcontractor attached to China Railway First Group was reportedly electrocuted in the early hours of Friday after coming into contact with a section of Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL)’s live electricity network while conducting pipe-laying work in the vicinity of Congress Place in Sophia, Greater Georgetown.
Up to press time, information on the victim was not available.
GPL, in a release, stated that the accidental contact with GPL’s live network also caused the feeder to trip at Sophia F3, resulting in brief interruptions to electricity service in Lamaha Gardens and Section K, Campbellville.
In addition, the Sophia F6 feeder also went offline, thus affecting customers in Areas A to E-Field Sophia.
In light of this, GPL reminds all contractors undertaking work near electricity infrastructure of the need to follow established safety protocols.
This includes coordinating with GPL before work begins, identifying electrical hazards, and ensuring that the necessary protective measures are in place before proceeding.
