The 25-year-old who reportedly beheaded his brother-in-law on Monday morning was subjected to a psychiatric evaluation and has since been detained in Police custody.
This is according to the Divisional Detective Office of A Division (Georgetown-East Bank Demerara), Superintendent Julius Wright, who told Guyana Times on Wednesday that the suspect, Anthony King, will most likely be processed for court this week.
“He’s in custody. A psychiatric evaluation was done so he likely would be before court on Friday,” said Wright.
King was arrested on Monday after he reportedly killed his sister’s husband at about 08:20h at the family’s Lot 1323 ‘Block Y’, Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
The dead man, 39-year-old Justin Peterkin of Paradise, East Coast Demerara (ECD) visited the area that morning when the incident occurred.
When Guyana Times arrived at the scene, a neighbour, Daniel Boutrim, recalled that he ventured outside of his house and subsequently spotted King, who was holding a hammer.
According to the neighbour, the suspect then entered the house and he subsequently heard a “knocking” sound which urged him to check again to see what was transpiring. He reportedly saw Peterkin lying motionless on the ground, being hammered and chopped about his body by his brother-in-law.
“When I peep, I see he chopping away on the man head down here with a kitchen chopper and lashing the hammer on the knife,” Boutrim told this publication.
After finishing the act, King reportedly left the yard and proceeded towards the street with the two weapons in hand. The neighbour said he went after the suspect and by then the Police arrived and took him into custody.
