Tagore, Skeldon emerge winners of BVA school tourney

Tagore Memorial and Skeldon Linepath Secondary School emerged winners in the respective Male and Female categories when the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) Inter-county finals culminated on Monday.

After weeks of intense competition among some of the best school teams in the Ancient County, the Guysuco Training Centre hostel compound was the venue of Monday’s final. In the female category it was; New Amsterdam Multilateral, Berbice High School, Corentyne Comprehensive High, Central Corentyne Secondary and Skeldon Line Path Secondary.
In the finals it was Skeldon who shot Berbice High down by two sets; 25-22 and 25-5 to take the crown. In the male leg of the tournament it was; Tagore Memorial, Central Corentyne Secondary, Black Bush Secondary, Corentyne Comprehensive Secondary, Port Mourant Secondary, Berbice High School and New Amsterdam who did battle.
In the end it was New Amsterdam and Tagore who met in the finals with the latter whipping their opponents two sets to none with a score-line of 25-11, 25-8 to bag the title. There were also a huge number of awards distributed by the BVA and the National Sports Commission (NSC) to the top performers.
BVA President Levi Nedd expressed thanks to Director of Sports Christopher Jones and the NCS for its arduous support of the competition. He also thanked the Regional Education Deputy Volika Jaikissoon.
“To all schools that participated, it is hoped that with more sponsorship the rest can be bigger and better.” Nedd also indicated that the next Volleyball activity in the ancient county is the Balram Shane tournament for seniors, and a referee course for clubs and interested persons.
The MVP award for females was awarded to Stephney Lewis of Skeldon Line Path while the Male MVP award went to Andy Rohoman of Tagore Memorial.
