Taxi driver slapped with narco trafficking charge

A 30-year-old taxi driver was on Friday remanded to prison when he appeared at the Providence Magistrate’s Court charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
Shazid Shaw denied that on January 29, 2019, while he was at his Timehri, East Bank Demerara residence, he had in his possession 668 grams of cannabis.
According to the prosecution’s case, an intelligence-led operation was conducted by ranks of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Shaw’s home when the narcotic was unearthed in the yard.
The defendant’s pregnant wife, mother and father-in-law were also taken into custody for questioning but were all released after 72 hours.
Defence Attorney Bernard DaSilva made a successful bail application.
Magistrate Sunil Scarce released the taxi driver on $100,000 bail on the condition that he report to the Timehri Police Station weekly until the completion of the trial. The case will continue on March 4, 2019.
