Teen cyclist critical after being hit by speeding minibus on ECD highway

A teenager is currently in a critical at the Georgetown Public Hospital after he was hit by a minibus along the Mon Repose Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD) on Saturday evening. The injured lad is 16-yeawr-old Vishwanauth Doodnauth of Lot 126 Dr Miller Street, Triumph, ECD.

According to the police, Doodnauth, and his younger brother were on separate bicycles riding along the Mon Repos Public Road when he was struck by the minibus which was reportedly speeding. As a result of the collision, the teenager fell onto the roadway and sustained injured about his body.
The minibus stopped and several persons exited to render assistance but while doing so, the driver sped away. The teenager was picked up in an unconscious condition by public-spirited citizens and taken to GPHC where he was admitted a patient in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) suffering from Intracranial Hemorrhage (bleeding in the skull).
Checks were made in the Mon Repos area with the description given to the police and the said minibus was found on the Mon Repos Public Road with damages consistent with the accident. However, on Sunday, the owner of the minibus, Quincy Trotman, 37, of Doch Four Housing Scheme ECD turned up at the Beterverwagting Police Station where he identified himself as the driver of the at the time of the accident.
As such, he was arrested is assisting Police in their investigations.
Nevertheless, at the home of the teenager on Sunday, his family recalled that young man and his younger brother were heading home after dropping off a friend at Jango Town, Mon Repose when the incident occurred.
The injured youth’s younger brother who was with him at the time revealed that as they were crossing the road, the minibus was nowhere in sight. He said the minibus appeared out of nowhere and slammed into his brother with a force.
After the teen fell to the ground, he panicked, picked up his bicycle and rode home to inform his relatives. He said he does not know what occurred after that.
Meanwhile, the teen’s grandmother Hansrajie Jagrup said after hearing about the accident, she went to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she was not allowed to see him.
The woman explained that she and her husband have been taking care of the now injured teen and his younger brother since they were babies. However, she added that the teen’s mother was able to see him and was told that his condition has not improved.
“Since last night [ Saturday night], he hasn’t regained consciousness, he is not responding anything”, the tearful woman cried.
Meanwhile, prior to the man’s arrest, the family provided recording to the Guyana Times of a telephone conversation between them and an unknown person who is calming to be a doctor.
The person on the other end of the call was heard identifying himself as a doctor at the Georgetown Public Hospital who was seeking the interest of the teen.
In the recording the man was heard telling the teen’s relatives that due to the extent of his injury, he had to be transferred to a private hospital.
The man further told the injured teen’s grandmother that they would not have to worry, about any money, because “the family on the other side will take care of it”.
“They want to offer you grandson private medical care at a hospital. Is that something the family would be open to? We got to move quickly to let him get the best care as possible”, the person said in the recording. This the family, believes is a hoax and would be presenting the recording to the police for them to investigate.
