Teen to serve 4-year jail sentence for robbery

A teenager was on Monday sentenced to four years’ imprisonment when he appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Teon Williams, 18, of Lot 1 Chapel and Durban Streets, Georgetown, initially pleaded not guilty to the charge of robbery and was granted $125,000 bail.

It was alleged that on September 17, 2015 at Sussex Street, Georgetown, he robbed Verma Wilson Thom of two passports along with $145,000 in cash.

Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman, in presenting the prosecution’s case, stated that on the day in question, the Virtual Complainant (VC), a teacher, was visiting Georgetown for a conference when she was robbed.

According to the prosecution, Thom was on her way to the conference when the defendant rode up on a black BMX bicycle and tried to snatch her gold bangle from her hand. He was unsuccessful in doing so, but turned around and snatched her bag which contained the items.

Magistrate McGusty said that the prosecution had proven beyond reasonable doubt that Williams was guilty of the offence.

After the sentence was handed down, Williams’ mother took to the streets to vent her frustration, screaming that her son was innocent of the offence.
