reality. The one mile race is set for Sunday May 29 in central Georgetown.

At a press conference held the 7O4 Sports Bar, event organizers Kwame Rigby and Carey Griffith assured the media that the race which coincides with Guyana’s Golden Jubilee of Independence celebrations will attract some of the biggest names in running including, Cleveland Ford, Cleveland Thomas, John Fagundes and the sensational Winston Missigher who won two 10k races last Sunday.

There will be juniors, seniors and masters categories for both male and female with finishers from first to fourth in each category receiving prizes. Both of the organizers who are regular competitors in 5 and 10K runs revealed that the male winner is guaranteed a whopping $75,000. They also encouraged runners and supporters of the sport to be present since there will be lots of prizes to be won.

President of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) Aubrey Hutson said that his office was very pleased to be associated with the event while ensuring that safety of the athletes will be a top priority. He also commended Messrs Rigby and Griffith for taking the initiative in supporting track & field which promotes participation from a health stand point and competitiveness from the perspective where standards can be raised.

Registration fee is $1,000 and may be done at the Professional Key Shop, Carmichael Street (698-8845) or at the (AAG) office, 125 Light Street Alberttown (231-7106/7).

The one mile road race will start at 16:00 hrs outside of the 7O4 Sports Bar on Lamaha Street and proceed west along Lamaha Street then south into the eastern carriageway of Carmichael Street, finishing in front of the Professional Key Shop/Oasis Café building.

The organizers hinted at having the “Golden Mile” on an annual basis.
