Top seeds and several established players advanced on Friday evening when the second day of the Guyana 60th Independence Anniversary Badminton Tournament continued at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue.
The competition, which forms part of Guyana’s 60th independence celebrations, featured a packed schedule of matches across the Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles and Under-23 categories. Play continues throughout the weekend and is scheduled to conclude today, Sunday.

In the Men’s Singles round-of-16 matches, top seed Akili Haynes advanced via walkover against Avinash Odit, while Jaurel Hendricks defeated Ronit Gulchand 21-16, 21-16. Frank Waddell, seeded third/fourth, moved through after a 21-12, 22-20 win over Grandison Robinson, and Nikolas Pollard recovered from losing the opening game to beat Gabriel Felix 19-21, 21-18, 21-12.
Sheraz Nabbie produced one of the most dominant performances of the evening with a 21-2, 21-5 victory over Halen Jiang, while Nkosi Beaton dispatched Chike Nurse 21-8 and 21-12. Chioke Nurse also progressed with a 21-8, 21-15 win against Mikkel Wong, and second seed Tyrese Jeffrey edged Jonathan Mangra 21-19 and 21-18.
The men’s doubles competition also delivered several strong performances. Top seeds Nkosi Beaton and Daniel Tan advanced by walkover, while the pairing of Chike Nurse and Chioke Nurse comfortably defeated Brandon Cunje and Ethan Mangra 21-6, 21-10. Percival Chester and Ronit Gulchand, seeded third/fourth, defeated Gabriel Felix and Nikolas Pollard 21-7, 21-10.

Mohamed Farouk and Haresh Persaud came from a game down to beat Miguel Angel Jose Vasquez Silva and Hasani Robinson 14-21, 21-17, 21-15 in one of the more competitive doubles matches of the night. Haymant Ramdhani and Jason Stephney also advanced after defeating Saevion David Longe and Kevin Matai 21-11, 21-11.
Troxley Cutting and Grandison Robinson secured a 21-12, 21-11 win over Joel Rambiriche and Caleb Tan, while Sheraz Nabbie and Frank Waddell overpowered Vishal Prakash and Mahender Sharma 21-6, 21-5. Akili Haynes and Tyrese Jeffrey then closed out the round with a hard-fought 21-11, 22-20 victory against Jaurel Hendricks and Jonathan Mangra.
In the Women’s Singles quarter-finals, top seed Mishka Beharry defeated Menikshi Jaikissoon 21-16, 21-9, while Alimah Eastman progressed by walkover against Macayle Greene. Asiyah Eastman secured a straight-sets 21-10, 21-8 win over Dana Persaud, and second seed Ashley Khalil defeated Leshaunte Berkley 21-13, 21-15.
The Under-23 Men’s Singles quarter-finals saw top seed Frank Waddell beat Chike Nurse 21-9, 21-11, while Yonneil Benjamin overcame Gabriel Felix in a three-game contest, winning 21-11, 21-23, 21-17. Caleb Tan defeated Nikolas Pollard 21-7 and 21-12, and Christopher Jordan got past Joel Rambiriche 21-9 and 21-4.
Meanwhile, in the Under-23 Women’s Singles quarter-finals, Mishka Beharry defeated Leshaunte Berkley 21-14, 21-13, while Menikshi Jaikissoon brushed aside Lucy Leo 21-3, 21-5. Anya Manickchand secured a 21-8, 21-17 win over Anika De Freitas, and second seed Alimah Eastman advanced with a 21-7, 21-11 victory against Cathalina Wong.
