UG Trojans sink Vikings in prep match

In their bid to defend their title at the University Games in Colombia in May 2019, the UG Trojans have continued their winning ways, defeating the Vikings 87-38 last Tuesday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown.

Having lost a few games, and placing fourth in the GABA/Let’s bet under-23 division tournament, the University side bounced back with a commanding win over the Vikings, whom they had encountered in the past.
The Vikings had come with the intention of upsetting the Trojans before they depart for Colombia, but received the shock of their lives when the Trojans stifled their scoring.
The Trojans led 12-10 at the end of the first period, but accelerated their scoring in the second quarter to lead by 10, with the score reading 31-21.
Heading to the third quarter, fitness started to play a major role, as Trojans finished 43-31 at the end of the turn. Things took a drastic turn for the Vikings when they practically handed the Trojans the final quarter, scoring 7 against the Trojans’ 44.
For the Trojans it was do-or-die, as they needed the win to boost their confidence in preparation for the University Games.
Speaking with Guyana Times Sport, Trojans coach Warren Wilson said,” For the length of time we have been training, I’ve seen improvements in the chemistry of our team. We have also seen improvements in our defensive and offensive readiness, but we still need to tighten up on a few minor fundamentals. Other than that, I think we are fairly ready; I have good confidence in the ability of the squad. I think we have bounced back well, as when we departed to Kwakwani we lost badly, but as a team we did not allow it to get to us. But other than that, we have a good chance of defending our title”.
