According to reports received, the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) received the report of a fire at about 3:08h at the location, and immediately dispatched several tenders from the Central, Alberttown and Campbellville Fire Stations.
The firefighters managed to put out the blaze, but by this time, the entire building was completely destroyed. In addition, two other buildings located in the area were affected by the fire and suffered damage.
Both buildings were also unoccupied at the time of the fire. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.
Two weeks ago, several families were left homeless following two devasting Christmas Day fires at Company Road, Friendship, East Coast Demerara (ECD) and Rose Street, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
In the first fire at Lot 45 Company Road, Friendship, ECD, a two-storey wooden-and- concrete building was engulfed in flames. The top floor of the building was occupied by Estwick and Edorl Leitch, while the ground floor was occupied by Carlton Leitch and Odette Cummings.
One silver grey Honda motor car PMM 8427 owned by Carlton Leitch was destroyed, while a red and black Honda CG150 motorcycle, CE 4927, owned by Lincoln Leitch, was damaged in the inferno.
The second fire took place at Lot 169 Rose Street, West Ruimveldt. The one flat wooden and concrete building owned and occupied by Jewel Anderson and her family of three was completely gutted. The cause of the fire was subsequently given as a lit mosquito coil that was left unattended.
