Public Infrastructure Minister David Patterson, moments ago, announced that permission has been granted for the Vreed en Hoop – Georgetown water taxis to operate until 22:00h.
The extended hours of operation is as a result of a barge slamming into the southern side of the Demerara Harbour Bridge. The Cuban crew on the barge is currently in custody at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) assisting with investigations.
Initial reports suggested that the barge was not in its designated anchorage point and may have shifted from Diamond, East Bank Demerara as a result of poor control of the vessel.
Emergency repairs had to be halted due to the tide. The crew is expected to be back at work in about two hours.
