US deportee stabbed to death after allegedly assaulting teen

Dead: Carter Baboolall

A teenager is now on the run after he reportedly stabbed his attacker to death at Nigg Village, Corentyne, Berbice, on Friday evening.
The deceased man has been identified as 48-year-old Carter Baboolall, a United States deportee who had been renting an apartment at the Nigg New Housing Scheme for the past seven years. Based on reports received, the now-deceased man and the teenager were embroiled in an argument during which he assaulted the young man. In retaliation, the teen reportedly whipped out a knife and stabbed Baboolall several times. Up to press time, the Police had not released any information on the incident. However, the dead man’s landlord described him as a quiet and reserved person who rarely interacted with others living at the apartment complex.
“He ain’t used to mix up with people. He just used to keep to he self,” the landlord related. He worked as a labourer at a hardware store in the nearby village of Fyrish. One eyewitness, Narinedat Deodat, recalled seeing several persons gathering in the area. “Next thing I see, the man pull out something from the trench… When I look good, I see them pull out a man with bloody skin.”
At the home of the suspect, his mother stated that she learned of the incident through a phone call on Friday evening. She was told that her son had allegedly stabbed another man during a confrontation. The mother explained that she visited a nearby car wash to make enquiries and was told that there was an altercation between her son and the now-deceased man.
According to the woman, the deceased had allegedly cuffed the teenager several times, and in self-defence, he was stabbed.
At the time of the stabbing incident, a Police Officer was at the car wash servicing his vehicle and reportedly chased after the teenager after the attack but was unsuccessful in apprehending him. The woman added that she had been attempting to contact her son, but all were in vain. She added that the Police visited her home Friday evening, enquiring whether she had heard from the teenager.
“I promised the Police Officer that as soon as I find him, I going to carry him to the station,” she said. The woman said her greatest fear is not knowing what might have happened to her son since he disappeared.
“I really, really stressed out, you know, if he gone and do something to himself or if he still alive,” she said. “I don’t even know if he dead or if he alive or which side he in.”
The suspect, a school dropout from Nigg Village, reportedly worked occasionally at a car wash and also performed construction and carpentry duties with his stepfather.
