Veteran broadcaster Dr Rovin Deodat dies 

Veteran Guyanese broadcaster and communications specialist Dr Rovin Deodat has died.
Deodat passed away on Friday.
He was widely respected for his command of the English language, linguistic expertise and knowledge of words.
During his broadcasting career, Deodat, who has a PhD in Communications, a master’s degree in English and a bachelor’s degree in English, hosted a number of live and recorded radio programmes, including the popular “Word to Word” programme.
Dr Deodat was also a recipient of the Golden Arrow of Achievement (AA).
President Dr Irfaan Ali on Friday evening, in extending condolences following Dr Deodat’s death, described his passing as one that had removed “a familiar sound from the very life of a country.”

The President said Dr Deodat’s voice had been a daily companion for generations of Guyanese, reaching listeners in their homes, cars, offices and workplaces.
According to Ali, Dr Deodat’s work on “From Word to Word” took listeners into the world of language and served as a means of educating them about words and their proper use.
The President also highlighted Dr Deodat’s wider contribution beyond broadcasting, describing him as a communications professional, educator, broadcaster, and consultant who contributed to the development of broadcasting in Guyana.
Ali said Dr Deodat was also involved in training broadcasters who later became established voices on local radio.
“He was involved in training many of the broadcasters who would themselves become fixtures on local radio,” the President said.
Reflecting on Dr Deodat’s legacy, Ali said it extended to the broadcasters he trained, the listeners he educated and the students and citizens whose vocabulary was expanded through his work.
“To his family and friends, I extend my deepest condolences,” the President said, describing Dr Deodat’s life as one lived in service of knowledge, language, communication and country.
