Wanted man shot dead by Police

Twenty-two-year-old Sherwin Filley also known as “Red Ants” of Plaisance, East Coast Demerara (ECD), who was wanted by the Police in connection with several armed robberies, was in the wee hours of Thursday shot dead.
Based on Police information, the now dead man was wanted for robbery, robbery with violence and three counts of wounding committed on a 50-year-old resident of Vryheids Lust, ECD.
Police stated that on the day in question, ranks acting on information swooped down on an abandoned wooden shack in the vicinity of Ogle Seawall, where they saw Filley.
However, in an attempt to apprehend the wanted man, the ranks had to use force to open the door to gain entry into the shack. At the time, the now dead man reportedly armed himself with a cutlass and attacked a Police rank.
In retaliation, the rank discharged one round from his .38 service Revolver, hitting Filley in one of his eyes. He reportedly collapsed and was picked up and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His body is at the GPHC mortuary awaiting a post-mortem. An investigation has been launched into the fatal shooting.
