Western Tigers are favourites for Mayor’s Cup

Four teams are standing in the annual Mayor’s Cup Football Championship with Western Tigers being dubbed favourites for the title when the semi-finals kick off on Sunday September 4 at the Georgetown Football Club Ground, Bourda.

At this stage, the least one of the four teams will walk away with is the fourth place prize of $100,000 and the Ministry of State Trophy.

Western Tigers who are playing well in this year’s tournament got the ‘favourites’ tag after a commanding 7-2 victory over Eagles United of Linden in their previous encounter.

All eyes will be on Western Tiger’s Dwayne McLennon, who deposited three top class goals against Eagles to take his tally of goals in the tournament to eight.

Mc Lennon is dangerous, on his day, but when partnered with Dellon Kelly, Randolph Wagner, Andre Webber and Philip Rowley, the team could be difficult to contain.

Western Tigers is due to battle with the first team to have qualified for the semi-finals, Ann’s Grove at the Victoria Ground in the second match of the night.

Ann’s Grove, are also not to be taken lightly with the likes of Quincy Johnson and Hikosie Denny in their lineup.

In the other semi final, Police will play Winners connection from 18:30 h.

The lawmen defeated Santos 3-0 to reach the final-four stage and will be relying on the energy produced by Quincy Holder, who scored twice in that contest. The high spirited Holder will be looking to lead from the front once again.Winner’s Connection, who are coming up against the lawmen will be looking to better their game, having barely squeezed past Riddim Squad, 1-0 on their way to the semis.

All of the matches will be played at the GFC ground, Bourda.

The teams be battling for the top prize of $700,000 and a trophy, compliments of Aruwai Resort while the second place finisher will receive $300,000 and the Ansa Mc AL trophy. The third placed team will take home $200,000 as well as a trophy compliments of John Fernandes Limited and fourth place will pocket $100,000 and the Ministry of State trophy. Additionally, the top four teams will receive hampers from Ricks and Sari.

The top goal-scorer of the tournament will be the recipient of a three-piece living room suite compliments of AH&L Kissoon.
