WI v SL: “The guys are looking forward to the challenge,” says Brathwaite
Day two action in the Sri Lanka v West Indies series saw the Caribbean side once again show their weakness against quality spin. While Roston Chase and Jomel Warrican were the standout bowlers in the first innings, the batsmen did not step up to the plate. Further, debutant Jeremy Solozano was hit on the head while fielding on the first day of the opening Test and was replaced by Shai Hope as his concussion substitute. Nevertheless, Captain Kraigg Brathwaite has stated that the team are looking forward to the challenge.
Solozano spent the night in a hospital in Colombo and will now be transported to his hotel to commence the appropriate protocols. Captain Brathwaite labelled the situation unfortunate: “Tough situation; obviously we heard at least he is doing good; the scans came back good and [we] will be supporting him 100 per cent.”
Brathwaite was impressed with the bowling of Chase and Warrican who snagged 5-83 and 3-87 respectively. He said he was impressed with the effort of the duo, but more importantly, the effort of the entire team owing to the fact that on day one only three wickets were taken. However, Brathwaite stated that the players came back and restricted their opponents to 368 which means the West Indies bagged some seven wickets for 105 runs on day two.
Addressing the issue of the top order struggling against spin, Brathwaite said, “Well, I mean, obviously, Shai was a little bit unlucky as the offspinner bowled some good balls. But I mean, obviously, we’ll sit and review how we can do better. Especially with the offspinner who got three scalps today, but you know, obviously, the guys are looking forward to the challenge. We know it won’t be easy, but we just got to keep supporting.”
In closing the Windies Captain did note that he did feel good about his innings of 41, but was disappointed that he was unable to carry on, so the next time he will make it his duty to rally on.
