A 36-year-old woman is among two persons charged in connection with an armed robbery at Burn Bush Dam, East Canje, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), during which bandits allegedly held a cutlass to a seven-year-old girl’s neck, assaulted her brother, and terrorised their parents before escaping with cash and valuables valued at $768,000.
Those charged are Rada Corlette, called “Vanessa”, and Micheal Embrack, called “Duck-man”.
The September 20 attack was carried out at the home of 32-year-old chef Parshram Arnold, who was reportedly awakened by someone choking him, only to discover three armed men standing beside his bed.
According to Arnold, one of the intruders pointed a gun at him and demanded money, while the others threatened members of his family.
The bandits also turned their attention to Arnold’s two young children. His eight-year-old son was reportedly hit in the head, while his seven-year-old daughter had a cutlass placed against her neck as the intruders threatened to kill her unless their demands were met.
Arnold was also reportedly punched as the bandits demanded money and searched the property for valuables.
During the ordeal, he was allegedly tied up while the armed intruders terrorised his family.
The bandits escaped with $375,000 cash and other valuables. According to the charge subsequently instituted, the cash and stolen articles had a combined value of $768,000.
Arnold operates a temple at the back of his home.
Investigations subsequently took another turn when police apprehended a woman and a man who were together in the man’s car.
The woman, Rada Corlette, called “Vanessa”, reportedly told investigators that she had recorded the interior of Arnold’s home, including aspects of its security arrangements and contents, and provided the footage to Micheal Embrack, called “Duck-man”.
Corlette also allegedly told investigators that Embrack had threatened to kill her if she revealed what had happened.
Corlette, 36, a self-employed resident of Fryish Village, Berbice, and Embrack, 39, a self-employed resident of Fort Ordnance Village, East Canje, have since been charged with robbery under arms.
The charge alleges that on September 20, at Burn Bush Dam, East Canje, they robbed Arnold of $375,000 and other articles with a combined value of $768,000.
Both appeared before Magistrate Michelle Matthias at the Albion Magistrate’s Court, where they were not required to plead to the indictable charge.
Bail was refused, and both were remanded to prison. The case will continue on October 21.
