The victim, Devon Thomas, was discharged from the New Amsterdam Hospital after being treated for burns to his face, torso and shoulder.
It was reported that days before the incident on January 20, Thomas, a lecturer at the New Amsterdam Technical Institute, had signalled his intention of filing a divorce after accusing his wife of an extra-marital affair. This newspaper was told that the suspect attempted to prevent Thomas’ actions by pleading with him to reconcile with her, however, these attempts failed. On January 20, Thomas had just exited the bathroom when the woman approached him with the pan of hot oil and doused him with it.
Prior to the incident, another woman – Lotoya Angel – a salesgirl of Gangaram Village, East Canje, Berbice, was also remanded for committing the same act on her partner.
