1 dead, 1 injured following 2-vehicle collision in Berbice
One taxi driver is now dead while another is hospitalised following a two-vehicle collision on Friday along the Bush Lot Public Road, Berbice.
Dead is 28-year-old Ajay Caramchan of Churchill Street, Springlands, Corentyne, Berbice while the injured man is 26-year-old Vishal Rabinchand of Haswell, Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice.

Based on reports received, Rabinchand, who was driving hire car HC 4263, was proceeding along the roadway while Caramchan, who was driving HC 9648, was proceeding in the opposite direction at a fast pace. At the time of the accident, he was reportedly transporting several cases of beer.
The now-dead man reportedly overtook another vehicle and ended up in the path of Rabinchand, thus causing a head-on collision. As a result, both drivers sustained injuries to their bodies.

They were picked up in a conscious state by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital where they were examined.
Rabinchand was reportedly treated and sent away while Caramchan was transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital for further medical attention but later succumbed to his injuries.
His body is presently at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Ghushmattie Caramchan, mother of the dead taxi driver, told sections of the media that her son would usually leave his home around 05:00h for work but on the fateful day, he left earlier without saying goodbye.

She recalled receiving a phone call later that morning, with the person on the other end of the line telling her that her son was involved in an accident and he did not make it. In a frantic state, she received another phone call informing her that he was at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
She noted that she rushed to the hospital but was told that he was in the operating theatre. “About 15 minutes after, a nurse call me and other family and tell we that he had internal injuries and was bleeding heavily and when they start operate on he, he died,” she told the media.
Her other son reportedly died about a year ago. The driver of the other vehicle was arrested as investigations continue.
