2 Berbice men slapped with gun possession charge

Winston Moriah, called “Ribs”, 21, a labourer of High Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice and fellow 21-year-old labourer Keion Clarke of Budhan Housing Scheme, West Canje, Berbice, Region Six were arraigned for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

They appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, and both pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on September 12, they had a .38 revolver in their possession when they were not holders of firearm licences. Magistrate Renita Singh remanded Moriah to prison and granted Clarke bail in the sum of $100,000. Their case has been adjourned to October 26, 2022.
Meanwhile, Clarke faced a separate charge for possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. Police said he was found with 48.7 grams of marijuana on September 12 at Budhan Housing Scheme.
The charge was laid under Section 5 (1)(a)(i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, Chapter 10:10. Clarke pleaded guilty to the charge before Magistrate Singh, who sentenced him to four months’ imprisonment.
