President of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), Amanda Hermonstine, in her reflection on the 2025 year for athletics, is proud of the progress the sport has made. Hermonstine highlighted to Guyana Times Sport that the year 2025 was focused on rebuilding the sport structurally.
“The 2025 season was about consolidation, strengthening our structures, broadening our base of athletes, and sharpening the systems that support high performance.
“The Athletics Association of Guyana closes the 2025 season with a deep sense of pride and renewed responsibility. Our athletes, coaches, technical officials, and partners have worked through another demanding year of training, competition, and rebuilding, and together we have laid essential foundations for 2026 and for our long-term ambition: meaningful representation and improved performances at the LA 2028 Olympic Games,” Hermonstine shared.
Further, Hermonstine shared a list of areas where improvements and small accomplishments were made by the association during 2025.
According to the AAG President, across local meets, road races, and regional championships, Guyanese athletes produced multiple personal best performances, especially among our youth and junior athletes; Continued to close the gap on regional rivals in sprinting and jumping and
Demonstrated improved consistency in technical events and relays, reflecting better preparation and planning.
Additionally, Hermonstine also noted the technical improvement of the association for the year: Coach and technical official development, ensuring more qualified personnel at our meets; Better competition management and timing, giving athletes more reliable results and feedback; A stronger emphasis on athlete welfare, from medical support at events to education on recovery, safeguarding, nutrition, and anti-doping.
Nevertheless, Hermonstine did note that “there is still a long way to go in medal counts and global rankings, but this year has shown that when our athletes are adequately prepared and appropriately exposed, they rise to the occasion,” Hermonstine confidently stated.
Finally, the AAG President stated that there still is room to grow while acknowledging the contributions of all associations that assist in the daily functioning of the association, “As we reflect on this year, the AAG acknowledges the sacrifice and commitment of our athletes, coaches, council, technical officials, parents, sponsors, and supporters. The performances of 2025 have reminded us that Guyana has the talent and the passion to stand on any stage,” Hermonstine lamented.
