With another three reported deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic on Thursday, the local death toll has taken a jump to 506.
According to the Health Ministry, two persons from Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) – a 65-year-old man who died on July 13 and a 59-year-old man who died on July 14 – are included in the latest figures. A 61-year-old woman from Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice), who died since June 28, is the third person.
On the previous Wednesday, four deaths were announced: a 43-year-old from Region One, a 55-year-old from Region Three, an 83-year-old from Region Six and a 75-year-old from Region 10.
Thursday’s dashboard showed an increase of 51 new cases in one day. The total confirmed cases in the country have now increased to 21,274. There are 10 patients being monitored in the Intensive Care Unit, 83 in institutional isolation, 1130 in home isolation, and one in institutional quarantine.
Some 19,545 of the 10,385 males and 10,889 females that tested positive have since recovered. Guyana has tested 205,962 persons since the virus was detected here.
An analysis of new cases shows 14 in Region One (Barima-Waini), five in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), 10 in Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), three in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), 11 in Region Six (East Berbice -Corentyne), one in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), one in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo), and three in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Upper Berbice). The number of cases remain unchanged in Regions Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) and Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) at 592 and 380 respectively.
Approximately 57 of the active COVID-19 patients in Guyana are currently hospitalised in facilities across the country.
Over at the Ocean View facility, four children who have tested positive are being treated – one of them in the Intensive Care Unit. The Infectious Diseases Hospital currently houses 42 patients.
“We have 57 persons who are currently in hospital across the country. Forty-two of those persons are at the Ocean View facility, and of those, we have 11 who are in the ICU. Of the 11 persons currently in the ICU, we have one child that is there, and in the hospital per se, we have four children. One child remains in the ICU. The three others are in the regular wards,” Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony informed on Thursday.
Additionally, two persons are at the West Demerara Regional Hospital, three are at the Mahaicony Hospital, five are at the New Amsterdam and Skeldon Hospitals; and two are at the Linden Hospital Complex.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), countries around the globe have reported 188,128,952 confirmed cases, with 4,059,339 deaths. In the Region of the Americas, there are 74,239,667 confirmed cases, while the death toll in the region has gone up to 1,949,777.
Authorities are urging the public to continue observing all COVID-19 preventative measures, particularly masking in public, social distancing, and frequent hand washing and sanitising. The measures also include a 22:30h (10:30pm) to 04:00h (4am) national curfew that is in effect until July 31, 2021.
