A spirited bowling performance from left-arm spinner Akini Adams, in addition to a stroke- filled unbeaten 57 from opener Mark Williams, gave Essequibo first day honours in the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)/Hand-in-Hand 3-Day Inter-county competition on Sunday at the Demerara Cricket Club.
At close of play, Essequibo were 72-0 with Williams on 57, inclusive of nine fours and one six and Nathan Persaud on 15, still trailing by 171 runs.
Earlier in the day, the pair of Bhaskar Yadram and Javid Karim and only added nine for the first wicket as Yadram was removed by medium pacer Keemo Paul for seven.
An entertaining 69-run partnership for the second wicket between Joshua Persaud (38) and Karim who was run out for 26, that looked to stabilise the innings but the double strike from spinner Looknauth Chinkoo put the under-17s in a precarious position at 72-3.
However, a steely partnership between Kevin Sinclair (48) and Alphius Bookie worth 102 put the youngsters back in the driver’s seat but when Sinclair fell for 48 with the score on 174 and Bookie later for 58, the spin of Adams tore in to the middle and lower order.
Only Ashmead Nedd (18) and Anthony Antonio (25) reached double figures afterwards as Adams spun webs around the batsmen to collect his six wickets; Chinkoo ended with 2-77.
Over at Everest Cricket Club, Left-arm spinner Keshram Seyhodan claimed 5-46 to lead Demerara’s route of Berbice for just 198 runs.
Joel Seitaram who battled for well-composed 76 was the only batsman who seemed to have an answer for Seyhodan
Play will resume today at 09:30h with Demerara on 38-0 and openers Ronaldo Renee and Raymond Perez on 11 and 18 respectively.
