Flexibility and consistency proved to be the winning formula for Ashley Khalil as she overcame a disrupted training schedule to secure the 2026 Women’s National Squash Championship at the National Racquet Centre on Sunday.
While many athletes rely on months of uninterrupted preparation heading into a national championship, Khalil revealed that her path to victory was far from ideal.
“Preparation for the championships was a little different this year due to personal commitments requiring me to adjust my training schedule,” she disclosed.
The experienced campaigner admitted that her court time was limited compared to previous years, but she found other ways to remain competitive.
“This time, I wasn’t able to spend as much time as I would have preferred on court, but my focus on staying consistent with my fitness routine and daily activity kept me in the game.”

Khalil credited years of dedication to the sport for helping her navigate the challenges.
“I made the most of the time I had available and fell back on the work I had put in over the years.”
The national title was especially meaningful given the circumstances surrounding her preparation.
“I’m incredibly grateful to have won the 2026 national title. For me, every championship follows unique hurdles that make the win special.”
She also paid tribute to the support network that has played a major role throughout her career.
“This title reminds me how grateful I am for my community of constant support, my family, coaches, physios, training partners and everyone who gives words of encouragement along the way.”
Despite standing atop the national podium once again, Khalil remains focused on the future rather than dwelling on the accomplishment.
“I’m very proud of the result but still mindful that there is more work to be done ahead.”
That work, she says, will be geared toward upcoming regional and international events.
“My focus remains on continuing to improve in the sport and represent Guyana to the best of my ability.”
Khalil believes continued improvements in fitness, movement, and consistency will be critical as she prepares for her next chapter on the international stage.
Last month, Khalil’s multi-sport prowess was also demonstrated when she captured the title at Guyana’s 60th Independence Diamond Jubilee Badminton Open.
