Albouystown man slapped with robbery charges

A 53-year-old resident of Albouystown, Georgetown made an appearance before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on charges of robbery under arms.
Patrick Smith pleaded guilty with explanation to the charge, which stated that on June 26, 2016 at Georgetown, while being in the company of others and armed with a gun, he robbed Gunradge Vidyallal of 0,000.
Smith also pleaded guilty with explanation to another charge that stated on the same day, while being in the company of others and armed with a gun, he robbed Corlotta Vidyallal of 5,000.
The unrepresented defendant explained to the court that he worked in the interior and upon his return to the city, he was intercepted by Police ranks who told him he looked like a man caught on Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage who committed a robbery. As such, he was detained. He added that the footage shown to him was a man who had a garment wrapped around half of his face while he was only able to see the man’s eyes and mouth. He clearly stated that the man was not him.
The Magistrate questioned the defendant as to why he would plead guilty if it was not him. He responded that since he worked in the interior and had no relatives to post bail for him, that was why he pleaded guilty. As such, a not-guilty plea was then entered by Magistrate Azore on the defendant’s behalf. However, the prosecution told the court that the man was identified in the CCTV footage and objected to bail.
Smith was remanded to prison. He will make his next court appearance on November 18, 2016.
