Alleged narco-trafficking lands woman on remand

A woman who reportedly had ganja in her possession at the Bartica Police Station was on Tuesday remanded to prison when she appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The charge against Elcy Indra Vigilance of Lot 67 C Wismar Housing Scheme, Linden stated that on September 29, 2018 at Bartica Police Station she had in her possession 489.9 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. The 25-year-old woman denied the charge when it was read to her.
The prosecution’s case was that on September 29, 2018 about 16:40h two Policemen noticed the woman acting in a suspicious manner at the Bartica Ferry Stelling. The Constables approached her and invited her to the Police station, which is a short distance away to conduct a search of her belongings.
During the search, a yellow plastic bag wrapped in clear scotch tape which contained leaves and seeds were unearthed. As such, he was arrested and charged.
In court on Tuesday, the Police Prosecutor objected to bail citing the seriousness and prevalence of the offence. Chief Magistrate McLennan upheld the prosecution’s submission and remanded Vigilance to prison. The case will continue on October 17, 2018 at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
