Back Circle, Sparta Boss, Gold is Money bag opening wins
Guinness “Greatest of the Streets” Georgetown tourney
The first night’s play in the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ 2019 Georgetown futsal tourney generated much excitement at the Cultural Centre Tarmac on Mandela Avenue, as some of the big names in this shorter format of football did what was expected of them by putting on a show for the boisterous crowd.
The night’s first encounter saw LA Ballers thumping Trap Squad by an emphatic 5-0 margin. Jaleel Hamilton led his team to victory with a brace in the 5th and 15th minutes, while Nicholas McArthur (3rd), Rashawn Ritch (5th) and Simeon Moore (12th) each contributed one to the tally of five.
After playing to a stalemate in regulation time, Albouystown ‘A’ and Upsetters turned to penalty shootout to decide the winner; and Albouystown prevailed 3-2 on penalties.
G. Owadr was the man of the hour for the John Street squad, as his Guinness Goal (a goal scored in the final minutes of the game counts for two goals) saved the day for his team in their encounter against North Ruimveldt. The score was thus settled at 2-0.
A hard fought battle between Alexander Village and California Square, which made for good entertainment, ended with Alexander Village prevailing 2-1.
Leon Yaw opened the scoring for Alexander Village in the 2nd minute, and Meshach Barrett levelled the scores for California Square. A clean strike by M. Murray again gave Alexander Village the lead, which they managed to keep until the final whistle was blown.
As the night wound down, the action became more intense as play became more urgent on the hard court. Stabroek Ballers put up a fight, but eventually proved no match for the experienced North East La Penitence. Keifer Brandt (5th and 7th), Kelvin Moore (9th) and Alwyn Moore (13th) were responsible for the North East 5 goals scored. A Guinness Goal in the 18th off the boots of Shamar Welch was not enough to pull the game back for Stabroek.
One of the most thrilling encounters of the night saw Back Circle and Norton Street settling their differences at the penalty mark. Dellon Kelly (5th), Selwyn Williams (8th) and Stephon McLean (13th) each scored a goal for Back Circle; while a goal in the 7th and a Guinness Goal in the 19th from Carl Griffith earned Norton Street 3 goals. Back Circle triumphed by 4 goals to 3.
The experienced Sparta Boss made light work of Judgement Yard to take a win. Ryan Hackett was responsible for the team’s three goals.
Gold is Money also had a walk in the park against Globe Yard. Jermin Junior (13th) and Michael Pedro (17th) netted one each for the 2-0 victory.
The Georgetown sub-meet is the final regional competition before the National Championships next month.
