Belgrave, Moore to carry Guyana’s flag at Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony

History will be made on Friday evening in Glasgow, Scotland, when 3×3 basketball standout Travis Belgrave and national 800-metre runner Aaliyah Moore proudly carry Guyana’s Golden Arrowhead during the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.
The honour represents a landmark moment for both athletes and their respective sports, with Belgrave becoming the first basketball player in Guyana’s history to serve as a flag bearer at the Commonwealth Games, the world’s second-largest multi-sport event after the Olympic Games.
The selection is particularly significant as Guyana prepares to make its historic debut in 3×3 basketball, a milestone that has elevated the sport to new heights locally.
As one of the country’s leading 3×3 players, Belgrave’s appointment is a fitting recognition of his contribution to the discipline.
Speaking on the honour, Belgrave described the opportunity as one of the proudest moments of his sporting career.
“To carry Guyana’s flag at the Commonwealth Games is an incredible honour. It’s a proud moment not only for me personally but also for basketball in Guyana,” Belgrave said.

“I hope young people across the country see that 3×3 basketball can open doors and take you to some of the biggest sporting stages in the world. If you work hard and stay committed, opportunities like this are possible,” Belgrave added.
Belgrave also praised the Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF) for its commitment to developing the 3×3 format.
He pointed out, “The GBF has been working tirelessly to create opportunities like the Commonwealth Games for our players. This recognition is also a proud moment for the federation because it reflects the progress that has been made in growing 3×3 basketball in Guyana.”
Belgrave will be joined on the court by Kevin Mickle, Christian Hinckson and Anish Ramlall as Guyana competes in the event for the very first time.
Sharing flag-bearing duties will be Moore, one of Guyana’s premier middle-distance athletes, who will also be making her Commonwealth Games debut.
The 24-year-old has established herself as one of the country’s finest 800-metre runners and enters the Games with high expectations.
She will be aiming to become the first Guyanese athlete to win a Commonwealth Games medal since Troy Doris captured gold in the men’s triple jump at the Gold Coast Games in Australia.
Following the unfortunate withdrawal of Guyana’s boxing team after its athletes were ruled ineligible to compete because mandatory testing results were not received in time, the country will now be represented in athletics, swimming and 3×3 basketball.
Guyana’s athletics squad comprises Keliza Smith, Stefan Roach, Jackson Clarke, Aaliyah Moore, Noelex Holder, Akeem Stewart, Revon Williams, Simeon Adams and Shamar Horatio, under the guidance of officials Mark Scott, Thelson Williams, and Lindon Phillips.
In swimming, Aleka Persaud, Chase Thompson and Delroy Tyrrell will represent the Golden Arrowhead, with Ewin Enmore serving as coach.
The Commonwealth Games will run from today, July 23, to August 2.
