Bishundial targets fitness, unity ahead of Regional U-19 Tournament

Guyana’s Under-19 Head Coach Kumar Bishundial has outlined fitness, mental preparation, and team unity as key priorities as the national youth squad gears up for the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Regional Under-19 Tournament in Antigua from July 7–23, 2026.
Speaking on the team’s ongoing preparations in Essequibo, Bishundial said the primary objective of the training camps is to ensure the players are in peak condition both physically and mentally while fostering strong camaraderie among them.
“Our primary objective is basically to get the guys in shape both mentally and physically, while also building good team cohesion and camaraderie among the squad,” Bishundial explained.
However, the coach admitted that preparations have been hampered by unfavourable weather condi-tions, which have disrupted the initial training sessions.

“It has been badly affected so far, as the weather hasn’t been favourable. The first encampment started this weekend, and it’s not looking good at the moment. We’re hoping for some good weather to prevail in the future encampments,” he said.
Despite the challenges, Bishundial expressed confidence in the talent available within the squad, not-ing that many of the players have developed strong relationships through years of competing together at the youth level.
Bishundial told this publication, “Oh yes, most definitely. I’m pleased with the talent and skillset these guys have. It is just for us to sharpen them and get them prepared ahead of the tournament. It’s a re-ally good bunch of guys, and most of them have been playing together for a while now at the youth level, so that’s an added boost.”

Looking ahead to the regional competition, Bishundial emphasised the importance of teamwork, dis-cipline, and adaptability if Guyana is to achieve success in Antigua.
“For us to be successful, we have to stick together as a team and express ourselves in the games while showing good discipline, determination, and dedication. We also have to adapt to the conditions in Antigua as early as possible,” he reasoned.
Guyana will be aiming to make a strong impression at the regional tournament, with the coaching staff hopeful that continued preparation and improved weather conditions will allow the team to fine-tune its skills before departing for Antigua.
