Bissu upsets Wong for u-18 title

With every final Niran Bissu seems to be improving his racket-wielding ability and he reaped a tremendous reward by defeating number one seed Miguel Wong in straight sets to win the boys’ 18 and under title at the Scotiabank sponsored Junior Table Tennis Invitational tournament on Sunday.

Auditorium, Bissu stuck to his plans and soared to a straight set victory winning 11-7, 11-9 and 11-6.
The third-place battle was more drawn out as Jamal Nicholas held his nerve to win 11-9, 11-9, 7-11, 11-13, 12-10 against Ashish Persaud.
Bissu also won the 15 and under title which was played on a round-robin basis; he came ahead of Isaiah Layne and Kaysan Ninvalle.
The girls’ category was won by Nevaeh Clarkston with Thuraia Thomas and Shania Barrow in second and third respectively. However, Thomas turned the tables on Clarkston to win the 18 and under crown in 11-9, 11-6, 9-11 and 11-8. In the battle for third, Barrow got the better of Nkechi McRae, winning 11-6, 7-11, 6-11 and 8-11.
Kyle Edghill making a return, had to work up a sweat to get ahead of Wong but in the end won the ‘B’ Class (Open) 11-13, 11-8, 11-4, 6-11 and 11-3 while for third Terrence Rausch 9-11, 11-2, 11-7 and 11-9 was too much for Nicholas. Bad light forced the 21 and under category to be played this weekend.
Titans’ representative Dwain Dick in giving his overview for another successful tournament hosted in two weekends expressed his delight in the growth of the young players at the club and hopes the competitions serves as ample preparation for the regional junior and cadet championships which are scheduled for April 2 to 10 in Cuba.
