British supermarket supporting local sport development

The Sainsbury Supermarket has partnered with Anthony Price to get in the good habit of donating to the development of sports in Guyana.

Price, who is an English-based Guyanese, said he has been working with the supermarket for over 12 years and took the idea to the manager of the Winchester branch of the company, Patsy Fraff who immediately pounced on the opportunity to help develop his (Price) native land in the area of sport.

Noting the challenges sport faces in Guyana, so far the company has donated a quantity of jerseys to clubs such as the Trafalgar Sports Club located in Number 28 Village West Coast, Berbice as well as football gears in Linden, cricket gears in Berbice and running shoes to athletes across Georgetown.

According to the Price, some of the shoes donated had attracted a cost of over $10,000 while more than 55 jerseys were donated.

Many of the youngsters receiving the gears were all thankful to be noticed and appreciative to have persons who actually cared about the well being and development of sports locally.

Price, who was an adamant athlete in his day, said that the target groups for the project is to provide equipment to teams and kids who are in desperate need of these gears.

“The youths should be in school or on a field playing not robbing and falling into bad company” Price stated, “and this is why our efforts have been thriving for over six years in Guyana.

Sainsbury Limited has been making charitable works in England for a number of years and has taken the opportunity to participate in such activities in Guyana after seeing potential in athletes.
