Bystander shot after bandits open fire during money-changer robbery

– Suspected robber arrested at hospital with gunshot wound

A 41-year-old maintenance worker was shot in the leg on Friday evening during an armed robbery at a money changer on America and Longden Streets, Georgetown.
The injured man, of Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was reportedly standing in close proximity when the robbery unfolded.
Investigations revealed that a 35-year-old money changer and businessman from Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was seated on his motorcycle along America Street conducting business when two men approached him on a black XR motorcycle.
The pillion rider reportedly dismounted from the motorcycle and held the victim at gunpoint while demanding money. The suspect subsequently relieved the businessman of $200,000, which was in his right-side pants pocket.
However, as the suspect attempted to re-join the waiting motorcycle, he reportedly discharged three rounds in the direction of the businessman, during which the maintenance worker was struck in the right leg.
The businessman, who is a licensed firearm holder, reportedly returned fire, thus striking the gunman, who fell onto the roadway. He nevertheless managed to get onto the motorcycle, and fled the scene.
Meanwhile, the injured maintenance worker was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was treated and admitted in stable condition. While at the hospital, a 24-year-old suspected to be one of the robbers was receiving medical treatment.
Investigators have since recovered two .32 spent shells and three 9mm spent shells at the scene. Efforts are ongoing to locate the second suspect as investigations continue.
