Cardiologist warns of rising sudden cardiac deaths among young adults in Guyana

Head of Internal Medicine and Cardiology at Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC), Dr Mahendra Carpen, has raised concern over an apparent increase in sudden deaths among young adults in Guyana, pointing to cardiovascular disease as the leading cause. In a social media post on Tuesday, Carpen said that in recent months there has been a “devastating recognition” of individuals in their 20s to 40s dying unexpectedly. He noted that these deaths have occurred during sleep or while carrying out routine activities. According to the cardiologist, sudden cardiac death is caused by an electrical malfunction in the heart, resulting in an abnormal rhythm that can lead to death. He explained that while the condition can stem from various causes, blockages in the heart are responsible in the majority of cases.

Carpen added that other contributing factors include inflammation or infection of the heart muscle, severe uncontrolled hypertension, and enlarged or stiffened heart muscles. Some inherited conditions may also increase the risk. He further highlighted that younger people in Guyana are showing an increase in serious heart disease. This includes not only blockages but also weakened heart muscles due to inflammation or infection, as well as complications linked to uncontrolled hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol. Lifestyle habits such as smoking were also identified as risk factors. Carpen urged the public to be aware of warning signs, including chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, and light-headedness. He emphasised that a noticeable decline in one’s ability to perform routine activities without fatigue may also be an early indicator of an underlying issue.
He advised individuals to seek medical evaluation if such symptoms occur and stressed the importance of regular health check-ups to aid early detection and management of heart conditions.
