Forty Under-17 players were shortlisted by the Guyana Football Federation’s technical squad following trails last Saturday as they commence preparation for this year’s Caribbean Football Union’s Men’s Under-17 Tournament in mid July 2016.
According to Lyndon France, GFF’s Technical Development Officer, last Saturday saw 72 players participating in the trials but due to the inclement weather, it was abandoned.
A final session is scheduled for the Guyana Defence Force Ground, Camp Ayanganna on Saturday July 2 at 13:00hrs with the alternate venue being the National Track and Field Facility, Leonora.
Following the session, the squad which also includes the six players from the Bartica Football Association (BFA), whom were unavoidably absent in the last session will further be trimmed to select the national squad which will consist of twenty six (26) players and encampment of the players will begin on the very day.
The team is scheduled to depart Guyana for US Virgin Islands (USVI) on the July 13, 2016. Guyana has been placed in Group Four with USVI, Jamaica and Antigua and Barbuda and will play their first game against Jamaica on July 15, 2016 at the Lionel Roberts Stadium, USVI at 14:30hrs. The second and third matches in the Round will be played on July 17 against USVI commencing at 17:00hrs and the July 19 against Antigua and Barbuda commencing at 14:30hrs.
The tournament is scheduled to conclude on September 25, 2016 in Trinidad and Tobago. Other members of the technical squad include Carlos Bernard (Manager), Vurlon Mills (Assistant Coach), Andrew Hazel (Goal Keeper Coach) and Pablino Cupideo (Physiotherapist).
