The National Sports Commission, along with the Guyana National Chess Federation, will be sending a National Junior Chess Team to the seventh Carifta Chess Championship, which is slated for March 29 to April 3, in Paramaribo, Suriname.
This is Guyana’s first time participating in this event, and the participants, along with their parents, on Wednesday visited the National Sports Commission and interacted with Assistant Director Brian Smith.
Smith wished the national team the best of luck on their journey, stating that he was proud of them and advised them to make their country proud.
Also, Guyana Chess Federation President James Bond gave his well wishes and best regards to all players.
The Team Manager is John Lee and he will be accompanied by National Chess Coach Wendell Meusa and Assistant Coach Orel Richardson.
The National Junior Chess Team is spearheaded by newly-crowned National Junior Champion Joshua Gopaul, fellow St Stanislaus chess comrade Ghansham Allijohn, Jaden Taylor and Chelsea Juma. Also on the team are Sasha Shariff and Ethan and Ronan Lee of Marian Academy, along with Keon Scott, Tyrese Kirt, Cleyon Andrews and Tyreese Lucas from the Albouystown “Open Mind” Chess Club.
The Chess Federation wishes to send special thanks to all parents, the National Sports Commission, the Suriname Chess Federation, the Government of Suriname, Loris Nathoo of Red Cherry, Pastor Keith Vigilance and members of the Albouystown Policing Youth Group.
