Construction worker on $250,000 bail over gun charge
A construction worker of New Amsterdam, Region Six (East Berbice/Corentyne) was on Wednesday placed on a total of $275,000 bail when he appeared before Magistrate Retina Singh at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court.
Dameon Southwell, 35, of Lot 55 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam is alleged to have had an unlicensed .38 revolver and two matching live rounds of ammunition in his possession.
Southwell pleaded not guilty to the charges, one of which alleged that on November 15, on Main Street, New Amsterdam, he had in his possession a firearm without being a licensed firearm holder.
The other charge alleged that on the same date and at the same place, he had in his possession two matching live rounds of ammunition without being in possession of the requisite licence.
He was placed on $200,000 bail on the illegal gun charge, and $50,000 bail on the illegal possession of ammunition charge. The cases will continue on January 20, 2021.
Additionally, Southwell was charged with malicious damage to property and assault. The offences were committed against Seon Halley on November 15 at Bermine Housing Scheme in New Amsterdam. He was fined $15,000 and $10,000 respectively for those offences.
The prosecution contended that a mobile patrol in New Amsterdam intercepted a white 212 motor car on Main Street, New Amsterdam. The driver and five occupants, inclusive of two females, were searched and the firearm and ammunition were found under the driver’s seat. Southwell was the driver of the car.
