Corentyne Inter-Village Football Tournament opens on Sunday

Corentyne’s Inter-Village Football Tournament opens today (Sunday) with Liverpool village and Rose Hall Town clashing at the Port Mourant Recreational Centre on the Corentyne.
The tournament is being used as a sensitiser for both the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) and the Berbice Football Association (BFA).
Teams along the Corentyne have for years been seeking permission from the BFA to form their own sub-association.
Back in 2018 they had approached the GFF and were directed to have the issue discussed with the BFA. However, the BFA did not grant approval, sighting the low quality of players on the Corentyne.
Then the BFA had suggested that teams from the Corentyne should be more involved in tournaments in Berbice in which some of the stronger teams in the region are participating. However, shortly after, a lull which lasted for several years had enveloped football in Berbice.
Teams on the Corentyne have reportedly sighted the high cost to travel to New Amsterdam, where most of the tournaments are played.
Orealla is 150 miles away from New Amsterdam. The community has two excellent teams, but they seldom participate in tournaments because organizers of tournaments do not make arrangements for their travel and accommodation.
There are also teams at Corriverton, which is 50 miles away from New Amsterdam.
Meanwhile, six teams are participating in this Inter-Village Football tournament: Rose Hall Town, Fyrish and Liverpool are in Group A; while Skeldon, Orealla and Kildonan are in Group B.
Games will be played on Sundays and Wednesdays. At stake will be both trophies and cash incentives. (Andrew Carmichael)
