Guinness “Greatest of the Streets” Football

‒ Showstoppers finish 3rd

The Linden-based Dave & Celina All-Stars football team were deemed the new Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ National Champions after registering a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Hustlers at Banks DIH Demerara Park on Saturday evening.
Most Valuable Player (MVP) Rawle Gittens was the architect of his team’s supremacy, scoring in the 6th and again in the 20th minute, much to the delight of the sizable crowd in attendance.
Additional goals came from Captain Kennard Simon (12th) and Keon Sears (19th). Anthony Sancho gave the opposition some respite with a goal late in the proceedings.

The victory meant that All-stars went home $550,000 richer, holding aloft the coveted trophy while the runners-up took $300,000 and a trophy.
In the third place play-off, Showstoppers won 1-0 against Silver Bullets, with Hubert Pedro’s 4th minute goal being the difference. Showstoppers pocked $200,000 while Bullets won $100,000.
During the semi-finals, All Stars defeated Jermaine & Family Bullets 4-3 in a thriller that went into extra time.
Gittens again was the superstar with a hat-trick, netting in the 20th, 31st and 34th minutes, while teammate Simon was on target in the 29th.
For the fellow Linden unit, goals came off the boots of Damion Williams (8th) and Jamie Samuels (30th & 36th).
The other semi-final saw Hustlers winning 1-0 against Showstoppers, with a Donald McKenize goal in the 18th minute making the difference.
2016 Champs, Sparta Boss, had been eliminated by the Money Team during the play-off rounds.
