Decade of Dedication: Dr Gonzales Morales honoured for outstanding work at GPHC

Dr Yubisleidis Gonzales Morales

With countless hours of dedication and service, Dr Yubisleidis Gonzales Morales has recently been recognised by the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) for her unwavering commitment to patient care in the Medical Outpatient Department (MOPD), where she has been serving the community with compassion for nearly a decade.
According to the GPHC, Dr Gonzales Morales’ journey in medicine began in 1995 when she graduated as a medical doctor. She spent the first two years of her career in rural service, gaining invaluable hands-on experience at the frontline. Driven by a desire to broaden her expertise, she later completed a three-year family medicine programme, graduating in 2000. Her career has been marked by continuous learning and international experience, including work in Ghana from 2006 to 2008 and in Trinidad and Tobago between 2012 and 2015, where she served in the Accident and Emergency Department at Sangre Grande Hospital.
At GPHC, she plays a critical role in the MOPD, a department known for its fast-paced and demanding environment. On peak clinic days, the department sees close to 250 patients, each with unique health concerns requiring attention, diagnosis, and management.
Despite the heavy workload, Dr Gonzales Morales remains motivated by her passion for helping people. The most rewarding part of her work is seeing patients improve. When they return to say that they are feeling better, it reinforces why quality outpatient care matters for her, the GPHC shared.
Reflecting on her time at GPHC, she said, “Being part of this institution holds both personal and professional significance for me. GPHC has allowed me to gain broad medical experience, manage urgent and complex cases, and work in a culturally diverse environment as Guyana’s leading public hospital.”
She noted that the institution has supported her professional growth while allowing her to provide compassionate, patient-centred care.
Dr Gonzales Morales explained that the MOPD sees a wide range of conditions daily, with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and circulation problems topping the list. Skin-related infections are also common, many of which can be prevented through proper hand hygiene and healthy lifestyle practices.
Her advice to the public is practical and preventative: maintain a healthy diet, limit alcohol and cigarette consumption, adhere to prescribed medications for chronic conditions, and take precautions against mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue.
To young doctors and healthcare professionals entering the field, she offers simple but powerful guidance: “Medicine requires passion. While the profession can be demanding, a genuine love for helping people is the key to success.”
With her dedication, experience, and commitment, Dr Yubisleidis Gonzales Morales continues to make a meaningful impact not only in the Medical Outpatient Department but also across GPHC, touching lives and reinforcing the importance of compassionate care in Guyana’s leading public hospital.
