Home News Decomposed body of miner found wrapped in hammock
The partially decomposed body of a miner was on Sunday discovered wrapped in a hammock a short distance from his camp located at Thomas Island, Puruni River, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).
The dead man has been identified as Tyrone Thomas of Charity, Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam). It is believed that the man was killed between September 1 and 6, 2020.
At the time of the discovery, the man’s body was stuck beside a tree in the Puruni River.
Based on reports received, the now dead man worked on a land dredge that is owned by a 25-year-old resident of Victoria Village, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
However, on August 16, 2020, the owner left Thomas and another worker – a Brazilian national at the camp. However, the businessman told investigators that about a week ago, he received a telephone call from Thomas informing him that the Brazilian national had left the worksite.
Nevertheless, the owner and two new workers from Georgetown travelled into the area on Saturday, September 5, 2020. They reportedly arrived at the camp at about 19:00h but there were no signs of Thomas.
The following day, the owner noted that there was a stench emanating from the Puruni River which was close to the mining camp and as such, he and others went to investigate.
It was then, he observed the body of Thomas wrapped in a multicoloured hammock. He immediately contacted the police and informed them of the gruesome discovery. Initial investigation by the police revealed that the hands and legs of the victim were bound and there was a gaping wound about the right eye.
The decomposed body was transported to the Bartica Regional Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem. No arrests have been made in connection with the heinous crime as Police continue their investigations.
