Former Guyana First-class player Sunil Dhaniram hit a splendid 113 for Our Own Sports Club on Sunday in the continuation of the 2016 Ontario Masters Softball Cricket Clubs (OMSCC) over-40, 20-overs competition in Toronto.

And in the Ontario Softball Cricket League (OSCL) open 20-over tournament, an ex-Guyana Under-19 batsman Troy Gobin carved out an attractive, unbeaten 100 for the victorious Rebels Sports Club against Wakenaam on Saturday.

Dhaniram, who also attired in the Canadian colours, struck seven fours and three mighty sixes to see defending champion Our Own Sports Club getting the better of Redco by 42 runs.

His team has now advanced to the semi-final stage which is scheduled for Sunday when they clash with nemesis Guyana Sports Club, a side Our Own has defeated on four occasions, historically in finals too.

Our Own will not only have the service of the Berbician Dhaniram, but they will have Gobin too along with former Guyana batsman Zaheer Haniff, ex-Essequibo senior Inter-county skipper Jaimini Singh and Canada’s 2003 and 2007 World Cup batsman Desmond Chumney.

In an invited comment from Our Own’s skipper Bobby Parasnauth, the veteran former Demerara inter-county softball captain expressed profound confidence of his team retaining the championship for an unprecedented five years in succession.

“I [am] very confident our team will emerge as the champion again; Guyana Sports Club has always shown us fight over the years in the finals but I know playing against them now at the semi-final should be even more competitive,” Parasnauth related.

In the other semis fixture, Hustlers will collide with Impac and that engagement is promising to be very riveted as well. According to president of the OMSCC, Azeem Khan, these two “A” Division clashes should be very exciting and they have got to thank them for their continued participation.

“I think we are definitely in for a treat on Sunday; these two teams have some talented players and over the years they have been entertaining,” the Canadian-based Guyanese Khan declared.

In the “B” Division, Royal and All-Stars will do battle while Ramblers facing off with Miracles.

Meanwhile, President of the OSCL, Albert Ramcharran recently declared that no team from his League is going to participate at the forthcoming Guyana Cup 6.

Ramcharran informed that financial constraint is the core reason while he also revealed that the unavailability of players has contributed significantly too.

An OSCL team did feature in the prominent softball ‘Mini World Cup’ under the captaincy of their current vice-president Terry Mathura several years ago.

OMSCC is also tentative to take part given the fact they are reportedly experiencing similar circumstances.
