Duo arraigned, remanded for ganja possession

The labourer and the miner who were caught by the Police on Saturday with a quantity of cannabis – which they claim was for their boss— made their first Court appearance on Tuesday and were remanded to prison.

Kevon Andrew, the 24-year-old labourer

Twenty-four-year-old Kevon Andrew, a labourer of Philadelphia Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice and Joel Amsterdam, 27, of Stanleytown, Berbice, appeared before Principal Magistrate Sherdell Isaacs at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Both men pleaded not guilty to the charge and were remanded to prison until February 20, 2020.
It was reported that on the day in question, Police ranks acting on information visited First Street, Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), where they observed the two men acting in a suspicious manner.
As the Police Officers approached them, the labourer started to run but was eventually apprehended by the ranks. At the time, he was carrying a black haversack on his back.

Twenty-seven-year-old miner Joel Amsterdam

Both he and his colleague were taken to the Bartica Police Station where the haversack was searched, during which investigators discovered three bulky parcels containing a number of stems, leaves, and seeds.
The labourer, however, told the Police that he and the pork-knocker were taking the cannabis to their employer.
The suspects never divulged the identity of their boss. The parcels of narcotics were weighed at 1454 grams collectively.
