ECD woman arrested following discovery of ganja in shoulder bag

A 38-year-old woman was on Thursday arrested after she was found with a quantity of ganja during a cordon and search exercise conducted by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) at Unity, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
During the operation, ranks received information and went to a house in Unity, ECD, where a search was conducted during which a quantity of marijuana was found in a shoulder bag.
As a result, the 38-year-old female was arrested and is currently in Police custody assisting with investigations. The cannabis was subsequently weighed in her presence and amounted to eight grams.
Last week, a 47-year-old Crane, West Coast Demerara (WCD) businessman and his 36-year-old wife were arrested after more than 4 kilograms of ganja was found on their premises.
It was reported that Police acting on information received went to the home of the businessman and executed a search on his Crane, West Coast Demerara (WCD) property.
During the search of the lower flat of the building, the businessman opened a blue plastic barrel where a black garbage bag was discovered. Upon checking, the ranks found three bulky transparent parcels containing 4.236 kilos (9.3lbs) of ganja.
He was told of the offence during which he admitted ownership of the illegal drug.
Further, a search was carried out at the back of his yard during which a cannabis sativa plant measuring about two and a half feet in height was found under a golden apple tree.
The businessman, Ryan Joseph called “Decky” was arraigned before Magistrate Crystal Lambert when he appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court.
He reportedly pleaded not guilty to the charges and was remanded to prison until January 25, 2021.
