Essequibo Coast youth drowns during family outing

The body of a dryer operator attached to the Hack Rice Mill, Essequibo Coast was on Monday pulled from the Essequibo River – one day after he went missing while swimming to shore after mooring a boat at the Hamburg Beach, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).

Dead: Humal “Avinash” Jaggernauth

The dead youth has been identified as 25-year-old Humal Jaggernauth, also called “Avinash” of Lot 3 Spring Gardens, Essequibo Coast.
According to information received, the young man and his family travelled to Hamburg Beach via a wooden boat for an outing. Upon arrival, the family members exited the boat and went ashore while Jaggernauth and an uncle remained behind, to moor the boat.
After doing so, the young man and his uncle began to swim towards the other family members on the beach, but only his uncle made it to shore. Vickash, a brother of the dead man, told Guyana Times that the incident occurred about 11:00h on Sunday.
He explained that when they realised that his brother did not make it to shore, family members formed several search parities to look for him, but they all came up empty-handed.
As it got dark on Sunday, the family called off the search and went home. On Monday morning, the distraught brother explained that the search resumed and about an hour later, his brother’s lifeless body was found in the same area where he went missing.
“This is something that he would do every time, but I can’t say what went wrong this time… it was probably he was at the wrong place at the wrong time,” the brother explained.
The young man, who was also the President of the Spring Gardens Mandir, was reportedly a good swimmer and as such, meeting his demise in such a manner has plunged the family into a state of shock.
Jaggernauth’s body was taken to the Suddie Hospital Mortuary to await a post-mortem as Police continue their investigations.
The young man leaves to mourn his parents, three siblings, and countless friends and other relatives.
