Family of critical Berbice welder calling for justice

…says driver of car yet to be charged

The family of 26-year-old Irfaan Ahmad, a father of one who is presently on life support at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after being struck down on Wednesday last is calling for justice.

Ahmad’s sister, Shabeena Ahmad, told Guyana Times that her brother’s condition has not improved and family members are at a loss as to why the driver of the motorcar, who is an overseas-based Guyanese, is yet to be charged.
According to his sister, it was only after several inquiries were made at the Blairmont Police Station that ranks went to the scene of the accident to take measurements. This was two days after the incident occurred. Shabeena Ahmad revealed that her family was then told by an investigating rank that the driver cannot be charged since Ahmad has not succumbed.
“She tell me that we cant charge the man because your brother still alive that we have to wait to see what happen with my brother,” the woman revealed.
Further, she told this publication that her family made inquiries as to whether the man’s passport has been confiscated by Police since he does not reside in Guyana but this also elicited a vague response.
“The Police tell we that she can’t tell we that, but I don’t understand how we brother deh battling for he life but they aren’t telling us anything. Only Sunday they even bother to go and take measurements on the road when he get knock down since Wednesday…she called me this morning (Wednesday) again to find out my brother condition. Like maybe to find out if he pass away but I can’t understand how only then the driver can be charged when he already attempted the escape the scene, how wasn’t he charged with that?” the woman questioned.
She noted that her family is fearful because if the driver escapes, justice will not be served.
The accident victim, a Sheildstown, West Coast Berbice (WCB) welder was struck down while making his way home from work at the Blairmont Estate.
This publication understands that Ahmad was at Sheildstown when he was struck from behind by a white motorcar. As a result of the impact, the man was thrown from his bicycle into the corner of the road. The driver of the car was instructed by persons in the area to take the injured man to the hospital and he complied. The injured man was rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital. Ahmad is nursing two broken arms and legs, a disconnected hip, spinal injuries and swelling to his brain.
When contacted, ranks at the Blairmont Police Station were unable to give an update on the investigation.
