An early morning fire on Sunday has completely gutted a workshop owned by Demerara Shipping Limited along Water Street, Georgetown, and the top floor of a four-storey wooden and concrete commercial building on Lombard Street, Georgetown.

Based on reports received, the fire reportedly started at about 3: 00h, and within minutes, the workshop, which is also being used as a spare parts bond, was completely engulfed.
However, due to the intensity of the fire, an adjacent building, which housed a tailor shop and several other businesses, caught fire.
The fire tenders and firefighters from the central fire station were deployed to the area and sprang into action. Their swift response contained the blaze, thus stopping it from spreading to other buildings.
Nevertheless, some buildings sustained damage due to the heat and water. Guyana Times understands that the fire might have started due to a spark from a low-bed hauler that was in the facility for repairs. In addition, one canter, two forklifts, and a quantity of spare parts were destroyed. This is yet to be confirmed by the Guyana Fire Service (GFS).
A full-scale investigation has been launched while those affected are counting their losses. At the scene early Sunday morning, those affected refused to speak to the media, and later that day, when the Guyana Times visited, no one was at the scene.
